What is ISO 17025 in plain terms?

ISO 17025 is the international standard for testing and calibration in laboratories. Where a general quality certification proves a company has documented processes, ISO 17025 proves that a laboratory can produce repeatable, technically valid results. To do so, an independent accreditation body audits the lab against the known standard.

Accreditation is maintained over time, which makes it an ongoing arrangement in which an outside auditor ensures the lab is credible and up to date. Even a long standing and trustworthy lab must be audited using ISO guidelines.

What does the audit cover?

Accreditation covers the quality process, such as the calibration of instruments, proficiency of analysts, chain of custody for samples, and the validation of methods, all explained in more detail below.
